The Twitter Hack May Have Been an Inside Job

High-profile Twitter accounts swept up in wave of apparent hacking

"It has been almost two years since our meeting, and Twitter DMs are still not encrypted, leaving them vulnerable to employees who abuse their internal access to the company's systems, and hackers who gain unauthorized access", said Wyden. We know they used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf. "We're diagnosing and will share everything we can when we have a more complete understanding of exactly what happened".

With highly acclaimed twitter accounts like former U.S. president Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates etc. compromised, all eyes are turning towards Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Tweets were sent from these accounts instructing people to send bitcoin to an address in order to get free bitcoin in return.

The company went on to say that after temporarily limiting Twitter activity - including a period where all verified accounts were prevented from tweeting - it has restored those features.

"On the one hand, tweets from government officials may help shape the American public narrative and provide greater insights into United States decision-making to reduce misperception by foreign actors", they wrote. "This may take additional time since we're taking extra steps to confirm that we're granting access to the rightful owner". The company said it is investigating and working to fix it, and promised an update shortly. Senator Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, urged Twitter to work with federal law enforcement and to answer questions about the breach, including whether users "may have faced data theft" and if President Trump's account, which did not appear to tweet any unauthorized messages, was threatened. "You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000".

Another person used a now infamous meme of Will Smith at the latest Red Table Talk to show how disgruntled Twitter's security team was trying to handle the mess from the hacking.

Security expert Will Geddes told talkRADIO the incident had "undermined the verification process" - referring to the blue tick attributed to profiles with large followings.

Once Twitter became aware of the incident, the company said it immediately locked down the affected accounts and removed tweets posted by the attackers. Twitter acknowledged the attack less than two hours after it began and offered the following statement.
