After months of downplaying face masks, UK PM Boris Johnson backtracks on issue

"The prime minister has been clear that people should be wearing face coverings in shops and we will make this mandatory from 24 July".

More than 50,000 people in Britain have died from the virus, and Johnson's government has faced intense criticism for its sometimes laissez-faire approach to public health measures, an attitude that was evident in its reluctance to make face coverings compulsory.

Venki set out his case in unambiguous terms last week when he said: "It used to be quite normal to have quite a few drinks and drive home, and it also used to be normal to drive without seatbelts".

The move follows a weekend of confusion over whether ministers meant to make face coverings compulsory after Boris Johnson said they were looking at "stricter" rules.

The rank and file police body's chair added: "The vast majority of the public have complied with the lockdown rules so far and I would hope that will continue and the public will do the right thing and wear face coverings in stores to help protect fellow citizens".

Dr Andrew Lee, a director at NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group, said: "There is a benefit - if someone's got an infection, they might be asymptomatic and a face covering is going to reduce likelihood of them transmitting an infection".

Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to tell the House of Commons on Tuesday that anyone failing to comply with the order could face a fine of up to 100 pounds ($125). The Welsh government has advised a face covering should be made of cotton (not silk or nylon), and have at least three layers.

"We'll be driving around and around London looking for people who aren't wearing masks, it's absolutely absurd".

Rather than relying on holding a tissue over your mouth, which offers questionable protection, or indeed forgoing any covering at all and risking a £100 fine, look to these stylish, safer options instead.

Children under the age of 11 and people with certain disabilities will be exempt, and the police will carry out the enforcement and not retail staff.

A survey by the EADT found Suffolk residents were in favour of making wearing coverings in shops compulsory, with 59% of respondents in a poll saying they would support the move.

There's limited information about how useful face shields are in preventing you from catching coronavirus. Inevitably, some would ask; why no face masks in pubs?!

What about surgical face masks and visors?

It adds to the list of places we have to be covered up which now includes all public transport as well as all hospital visitors and outpatients in England.

In Wales, the advice is to wear a face covering that consists of three layers.

In an interview with French television networks marking Bastille Day, France's Macron said "the best prevention" against the virus is masks, social distancing and hand washing.
