India's COVID Tally Inches Closer To 8 Lakh Mark, 26,506 New Cases In 24 Hours

The Health Ministry said that India is effectively dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and the country has the lowest caseloads and deaths in terms of its population in comparison to other nations. "With this progressively widening gap, the recovery rate has further improved to 62.78 per cent", the ministry said.

Tamil Nadu has reported 130,261 total cases of coronavirus and the death tally in the state has grown to 1,829. Total number of cases in the city is now at 90,149 including 61,934 recovered, 22,738 active cases and 5,202 deaths, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. With recoveries closing in on the five lakh-mark, the country's recovery rate now stands at 62.42%.

The COVID-19 death toll reached 331 in Telangana, 287 in Haryana, 277 in Andhra Pradesh, 183 in Punjab, 154 in Jammu and Kashmir, 115 in Bihar, 52 in Odisha, 46 in Uttarakhand and 27 in Kerala.

On an average, India is testing more than 2.6 lakh samples per day for COVID-19, an ICMR official said at the briefing, asserting that testing has been ramped up in the country in a big way. Active cases rose 20% in the last seven days, in line with the week-ago period (26 June to 3 July).

A total of 19,873 new patients were cured in last 24 hours, said the health ministry.

Tamil Nadu, at number two, now houses 1,26,581 confirmed cases of contagion with the state's death toll mounting to 1,765.

It is worth noting that data quality on cases and deaths vary across countries and regions because of factors such as differences in testing standards, and in protocols being followed for recording covid-related deaths. Arunachal Pradesh reported 335 cases, Mizoram has 226 cases, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 156, Meghalaya has registered 207Â infections so far, while Sikkim has recorded 134 cases.
