NY deaths top 21000; new threat prompts concerns after 5-year-old dies

COVID-19 has killed around 22,000 people in NY state, which has been shut down since Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered all non-essential businesses ordered closed on March 22.

At least 73 children in NY have been diagnosed with symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease - a rare inflammatory condition in children - and toxic shock syndrome.

"This is every parent's nightmare, right?"

Cuomo says all nursing home staff must now be tested twice a week, "That's not just a temperature check, that is a diagnostic test".

Governor Cuomo says new mandates have now been instituted across the state to help cut down on the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in nursing homes.

The syndrome has also been reported in European countries and symptoms reportedly range from rash, fever, reddening of the tongue, fever, redness of eyes and blood circulation issues.

Furthermore, a home must contact the family of a resident who has tested positive for the virus or who has died from a COVID-19-related illness within 24 hours. It's also similar to toxic shock syndrome, he said.

However, concern grew last week when the five-year-old boy succumbed to what doctors described as "paediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome" in NY.

Those in nursing homes often fall into both of the demographics that have the greatest risk of fatal complications from COVID-19: the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.

A handful of cases have been reported in other states, including Louisiana, Mississippi and California.

That is why NY is moving quickly to make sure all other states are on the look-out for the syndrome, Cuomo said, adding: "It may even be probable that this exists in other states and we want to make sure they are aware of it".

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said 10 children who have tested positive for the coronavirus are among 15 children who are showing Kawasaki disease symptoms.
