Canada-US border closure extended

Coronavirus: Justin Trudeau says US-Canada border to stay closed another month

Canada, US extend border restrictions for another 30 days

Canada and the USA will extend for 30 days the restrictions that closed their shared border to most travelers, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

In addition to announcing an extension to the border closure, Trudeau announced $306 million to aid Indigenous businesses and financial associations, and said his government is working with the provinces to address the problem of small businesses, forced to shut down, that can not pay their rent.

Trudeau originally announced on March 18 that the border would be closing to all non-essential travel, including tourism and recreation, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trudeau also announced Saturday that two planeloads of personal protective equipment has just arrived, and more shipments are due to arrive later this week. The president reportedly said the US and Canada are doing well in handling the pandemic. Almost 200,000 people normally cross the border daily.

Trudeau says as for getting back to the business of Parliament he does agree that limited sittings of MPs would be good for the country saying he looks forward to virtual sittings of government to pass legislation for Canadians but says there is one party that would like to see more in-person sittings more than Trudeaus says "he thinks wise".

Despite some promising signs that Canada is flattening the curve, and that new cases of COVID-19 are falling, Trudeau said the current restrictions across Canada must remain in place for some weeks yet.

"We will continue to take the measures necessary to keep Canadians safe while ensuring the continued flow of our essential supply chains on which so many Canadians depend", Trudeau said.

Many of Canada's confirmed coronavirus cases have come from people who had returned from travel in the US, according to the Associated Press.

The border restrictions previously set by the USA and Canada last month were set to expire this week.

Essential cross-border workers such as truck drivers, healthcare professionals and airline crews are still allowed to cross the border, the Associated Press reported.

The closure of the USA border took a little longer because it was a coordinated effort between the two countries.

Saturday's announcement of aid to Indigenous businesses followed yesterday's announcement of $1.7 billion in aid to Canada's oil and gas sector.
