Cuomo offers up NY as coronavirus vaccine 'laboratory'

U.S. coronavirus death toll tops 30000, New Yorkers told to wear masks

New Yorkers Ordered to Wear Face Coverings in Busy Areas

Almost one month into New York's stay-at-home order, Governor Andrew Cuomo presented several approaches to transition the state toward a "phased reopening" during his daily coronavirus briefing on Wednesday.

Today's executive order will require people in public to wear a mask or face covering that screens both the mouth and the nose if they can not maintain a distance greater than six feet. He said the rule to help control the spread of coronavirus would go into effect in three days.

Mr Cuomo, in an interview with NBC News earlier Tuesday, said: "If he thinks he's going to force this state, or any state for that matter, to do something that is reckless or irresponsible, that could endanger human life, literally, because we don't reopen correctly, you will see those virus numbers go up again, and more people will die".

The president did say the federal government would block governors from ending social-distancing practices early if federal health officials determined it was unwise, adding that he wanted states like NY - the epicentre of the pandemic - to take their time coming back online.

President Donald Trump says data indicates the United States is "past the peak" of the COVID-19 pandemic, clearing the way for his plans to roll out guidelines to begin to "reopen" the country.
