The United States has a potential to become the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak amid "very large acceleration" in the number of new cases, spokeswoman for the World Health Organisation Margaret Harris said on Tuesday.

"Europe is still the centre of the pandemic, but there had been "a very large acceleration" in cases in the United States", said the World Health Organization spokesperson.

The WHO said that, as of last Saturday, 75 per cent of new infections around the world were from Europe, and 15 per cent from the United States.

When she was further asked if the USA can become the new epicentre, Harris replied that the United Nations health agency is now "seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the US.

Ultimately, the goal is to ease the guidelines and open things up to very large sections of our country as we near the end of our historic battle with the invisible enemy", the president said.

Note that there is 54,867 total number of cases in the US.

Confirmed coronavirus cases exceeded 377,000 across 194 countries and territories as of early Tuesday, according to a Reuters tally, with over 16,500 deaths linked to the virus. Its death cases have considerably slowed down recently.

Of those, 40% were from the United States.
