With the virus now believed to be present in at least four separate communities in the Pacific Northwest - two in northern California, one in OR and the Washington outbreak - authorities are having to go well beyond the quarantine of infected travelers and tracing of close contacts that has defined the response. Both were in critical condition. One-quarter of Kirkland's firefighters were in quarantine on Sunday because they had been to the nursing facility.

Additionally, the hospital says that it has determined that some staff may have been exposed to the virus while working in an intensive care unit where the deceased patient had been treated.

Italy raised its death toll by 18 to 52 on Monday, with 1,835 confirmed cases, majority in the Lombardy and Veneto areas of the north. The virus has now spread to 11 American states. They posted their research online, but it was not published in a scientific journal or reviewed by other scientists.
