"He is in serious condition, but doctors have indicated his injuries are not life threatening", the statement said.

Hamlin said Ryan Newman is a "tough guy" in his post-race speech.

The race on Sunday was postponed a day for just the second time in 62 years after it rained moments after Trump's ceremonial pace lap.

"When everything happened at the end of the race, I knew that there was a race, but I never even focused over there", Gibbs said. "Hopefully, Ryan Newman's all right".
