Britain on Monday began to clear up after Storm Dennis battered the country over the weekend, leading the government's weather agency to issue a rare "danger to life" warning amid widespread flooding and high winds.

Mr Curtin tweeted: "Breaking: we now have the most flood warnings and alerts in force (594) in England than any other day on record".

South Wales Police said they had declared a major incident due to the flooding and severe weather.

"Many rescues have been carried out over the past few hours along with the evacuation of houses".

Rescuers pulled out two bodies from rough seas off the coast of southern England on Saturday.

Unfortunately, The Environment Agency has now warned more significant flooding can be expected this week - especially on Monday and Tuesday.

In northern England, the defence ministry deployed troops in West Yorkshire, hit by flooding from last weekend's Storm Ciara.

Airlines EasyJet and British Airways have held some 170 flights to the ground on Sunday.
