Former national security adviser John Bolton claims President Donald Trump personally asked him to ensure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would cater to his political demands, The New York Times reported, citing an unpublished manuscript of Bolton's upcoming book.
Cooper made the exchange public after the White House wrote to him stating that the manuscript had been reviewed by the NSC and appeared "to contain significant amounts of classified information".
"Under federal law and the nondisclosure agreements your client signed... the manuscript may not be published or otherwise disclosed without this classifed information", the letter says. They also asked multiple questions about White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, who bluntly acknowledged a quid pro quo with Ukraine at a news conference previous year.

White House has issued formal threat to Bolton to keep him from publishing book
Whether Bolton has swayed enough senators to call for witnesses remains to be seen.
The White House had no comment.
The impeachment trial now underway in the Senate centers on allegations that he pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate former US Vice President and potential 2020 election rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter and then withheld Congress-approved aid to Ukraine pending an announcement of that probe.
Bolton, who said he had resigned last September, even as Trump said he was sacked, had clashed with the president on a range of issues during his 17-month tenure, including North Korea, Venezuela and Iran.
Bolton wrote that Trump told him in August he wanted to keep aid to Ukraine frozen until it helped in probes into former Vice President Joe Biden, the leading Democrat seeking his party's nomination in November's presidential polls.
