Officials add that it's not too late to get the flu shot but residents who've yet to do so should act fast, as it takes "about two weeks for the vaccine to provide protection".
Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there have been 2,900 deaths so far this flu season and 55,000 hospitalizations. A Fayette County Health official said the traditional peak to the flu season still lies ahead.
The flu virus is now "widespread" in MI, according to the MDHHS website, and public health officials are urging residents to get vaccinated.
Flu viruses change constantly, which is why health officials must choose the influenza strains that vaccine makers should target for an upcoming season months in advance, when it is hard to know what strains might be circulating.
