American service member killed in action in Afghanistan

The Taliban Monday denied agreeing to any ceasefire in Afghanistan after rumors swirled of a potential deal that would see a reduction in fighting after more than 18 years of war.

Families of nearly 150 USA service members and civilians who were killed or wounded in terror attacks in Afghanistan sued a group of Western contractors involved in the nation's reconstruction for allegedly bribing the Taliban for protection for years.

The Associated Press first reported, citing anonymous Taliban officials, that the temporary agreement had been announced, although the promised duration is unclear.

The announcement comes on a day when Taliban insurgents killed at least 14 Afghan security forces in the latest of a series of deadly assaults over the past week. After 18 years of American military involvement in that country, there is no prospect of it becoming a reliable ally or, more important, a nation where USA -style freedoms are the norm.

US special peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has met with Taliban leaders in Qatar and, at times, has appeared close to reaching a cease-fire deal with the extremist group. President Trump ended conversations in September following a separate attack, which killed a US solider and 11 others.

Four members of the Taliban negotiating team met for a week with the ruling council before they agreed on the brief ceasefire.

Since then they have travelled to other parts of the country, often marching through areas controlled by the Taliban.
