Winter storm to cause potential travel issues for Sunday and Monday

It'll continue to produce heavy mountain snow and high winds across much of the western United States before tracking over the Rockies on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

In Boston, precipitation - a mix of snow and rain - is forecast to start before noon Sunday and continue through Monday night, according to the service.

The National Weather Service said travel could become impossible in some places. The Mid-Hudson Valley, Western Sullivan and DE counties 7 to 14 inches of snow, with some parts seeing higher amounts. Virtually every major US airport is clear of delays except for Denver International, where snow continues to back up arrivals and departures. Southern areas of Westchester and Rockland could see 2-4 inches of snow, while areas further north in Putnam and Rockland counties could see 4-8 inches of snow. More advisories, watches, and warnings will likely be needed as the late Sunday/early Monday winter storm unfolds.

Heavy snow shut down I-5 through the Grapevine in the Tejon Pass Thursday morning, but all lanes reopened at 11 PM Thursday with escorts.

In California, a significant portion of I-5 was closed because of snow, in addition to several other major routes.

The weather also prompted city and county officials in Los Angeles to open 24-hour shelters early for the homeless to escape the cold and rain.
